जयति जगतः प्रसूतिर्विश्वात्मा सहजभूषणं नभसः । द्रुतकनकसदृशदशशतमयूखमालाअर्चितः सविता ॥ १-०१ ॥

Glory be to the Sun who is the author and the Soul of the Universe, the ornament of the firmament and who is enveloped in a thousand rays of the colour of molten gold.

english translation

jayati jagataH prasUtirvizvAtmA sahajabhUSaNaM nabhasaH । drutakanakasadRzadazazatamayUkhamAlAarcitaH savitA ॥ 1-01 ॥

प्रथममुनिकथितं अवितथं अवलोक्य ग्रन्थविस्तरस्य अर्थम् । नातिलघुविपुलरचनाभिरुद्यतः स्पष्टं अभिधातुम् ॥ १-०२ ॥

Having correctly examined the substance of the voluminous works of the sages of the past, I attempt to write a clear treatise neither too long nor too short.

prathamamunikathitaM avitathaM avalokya granthavistarasya artham । nAtilaghuvipularacanAbhirudyataH spaSTaM abhidhAtum ॥ 1-02 ॥

मुनिविरचितं इदं इति यच्चिरन्तनं साधु न मनुजग्रथितम् । तुल्ये अर्थे अक्षरभेदादमन्त्रके का विशेषौक्तिः ॥ १-०३ ॥

What means the notion that the works of the Ṛṣis are sound and not so the works of men? In cases where the matter refers to no mantra, what is there to choose between, when the meaning is the same because the words are different?

muniviracitaM idaM iti yaccirantanaM sAdhu na manujagrathitam । tulye arthe akSarabhedAdamantrake kA vizeSauktiH ॥ 1-03 ॥

क्षितितनयदिवसवारो न शुभकृदिति यदि पितामहप्रोक्ते । कुजदिनं अनिष्टं इति वा को अत्र विशेषो नृदिव्य कृतेः॥ १-०४ ॥

If Brahmā has declared—“Kṣititanaya divasavāro net śubhakṛta” and mantra “Kujadinamaniṣṭam” what is there to choose between the work of man and that of a Deva?

kSititanayadivasavAro na zubhakRditi yadi pitAmahaprokte । kujadinaM aniSTaM iti vA ko atra vizeSo nRdivya kRteH॥ 1-04 ॥

आब्रह्मऽदिविनिःसृतं आलोक्य ग्रन्थविस्तरं क्रमशः । क्रियमाणकं एव एतत्समासतो अतो ममौत्साहः ॥ १-०५ ॥

Having examined the vast works that have proceeded from writers from Brahmā downwards, I purpose to write a brief work embodying the substance of the same. The task is a pleasing one to me.

Abrahma'diviniHsRtaM Alokya granthavistaraM kramazaH । kriyamANakaM eva etatsamAsato ato mamautsAhaH ॥ 1-05 ॥
