अन्त पालः पण्य सम्पात अनुग्रहेण वर्तयति, वैदेहकास् तु सम्भूय पण्यानाम् उत्कर्ष अपकर्षं कुर्वाणाः पणे पण शतं कुम्भे कुम्भ शतम् इत्य् आजीवन्ति ॥

the superintendent of the boundary increases commercial traffic by welcoming the arrival of merchandise, whereas traders unite in causing rise and fall in the value of articles, and live by making profits cent per cent in panas or kumbhas (measures of grain).

english translation

anta pAlaH paNya sampAta anugraheNa vartayati, vaidehakAs tu sambhUya paNyAnAm utkarSa apakarSaM kurvANAH paNe paNa zataM kumbhe kumbha zatam ity AjIvanti ॥

अभिजात उपरुद्धा भूमिः पशु व्रज उपरुद्धा वा इति "अभिजात उपरुद्धा भूमिः महा फला अप्य् आयुधीय उपकारिणी न क्षमा मोक्षयितुं व्यसन आबाध भयात्, पशु व्रज उपरुद्धा तु कृषि योग्या क्षमा मोक्षयितुम् ॥

Which is more desirable, land occupied by a high-born person or land reserved for grazing a flock of cattle? My teacher says that the land occupied by a high-born person is very productive; and it supplies men to the army; hence it does not deserve to be confiscated lest the owner might cause troubles

english translation

abhijAta uparuddhA bhUmiH pazu vraja uparuddhA vA iti "abhijAta uparuddhA bhUmiH mahA phalA apy AyudhIya upakAriNI na kSamA mokSayituM vyasana AbAdha bhayAt, pazu vraja uparuddhA tu kRSi yogyA kSamA mokSayitum ॥

विवीतं हि क्षेत्रेण बाध्यते" इत्य् आचार्याः ॥

whereas the land occupied for grazing a flock of cattle is cultivable and deserves therefore to be freed, for cultivable land is preferred to pasture land.

अभिजात उपरुद्धा भूमिर् अत्यन्त महा उपकारा अपि क्षमा मोक्षयितुं व्यसन आबाध भयात्, पशु व्रज उपरुद्धा तु कोश वाहन उपकारिणी न क्षमा मोक्षयितुम्, अन्यत्र सस्य वाप उपरोधाद् इति ॥

though immensely useful, the land occupied by a high-born person deserves to be freed, lest he might cause troubles (otherwise), whereas the land held for grazing a flock of cattle is productive of money and beasts, and does not therefore deserve to be confiscated unless cultivation of crops is impeded thereby.

english translation

abhijAta uparuddhA bhUmir atyanta mahA upakArA api kSamA mokSayituM vyasana AbAdha bhayAt, pazu vraja uparuddhA tu koza vAhana upakAriNI na kSamA mokSayitum, anyatra sasya vApa uparodhAd iti ॥
