शासनं च यथा उक्तं ब्रूयात्, प्राण आबाधे अपि दृष्टे ॥

Brightness in the tone, face, and eyes of the enemy; respectful reception of the mission; enquiry about the health of friends; taking part in the narration of virtues; giving a seat close to the throne.

zAsanaM ca yathA uktaM brUyAt, prANa AbAdhe api dRSTe ॥

परस्य वाचि वक्त्रे दृष्ट्यां च प्रसादं वाक्य पूजनम् इष्ट परिप्रश्नं गुण कथा सङ्गम् आसन्नम् आसनं सत्कारम् इष्टेषु स्मरणं विश्वास गमनं च लक्षयेत् तुष्टस्य, विपरीतम् अतुष्टस्य ॥

respectful treatment of the envoy; remembrance of friends; closing the mission with satisfaction;--all these shall be noted as indicating the good graces of the enemy and the reverse his displeasure.

english translation

parasya vAci vaktre dRSTyAM ca prasAdaM vAkya pUjanam iSTa paripraznaM guNa kathA saGgam Asannam AsanaM satkAram iSTeSu smaraNaM vizvAsa gamanaM ca lakSayet tuSTasya, viparItam atuSTasya ॥

तं ब्रूयात् "दूत मुखा हि राजानः, त्वं च अन्ये च ॥

A displeased enemy maybe told:-- "Messengers are the mouth-pieces of kings, not only of thyself, but of all.

taM brUyAt "dUta mukhA hi rAjAnaH, tvaM ca anye ca ॥

तस्माद् उद्यतेष्व् अपि शस्त्रेषु यथा उक्तं वक्तारो दूताः ॥

hence messengers who, in the face of weapons raised against them, have to express their mission as exactly as they are entrusted with do not, though outcasts, deserve death.

tasmAd udyateSv api zastreSu yathA uktaM vaktAro dUtAH ॥
