ग्राम अरण्यानाम् अध्वनि निवेशान् यवस इन्धन उदक वशेन परिसंख्याय स्थान आसन गमन कालं च यात्रां यायात् ॥
HAVING prepared a list of the villages and forests situated on the road with reference to their capacity to supply grass, firewood and water, march of the army should be regulated according to the programme of short and long halts.

grAma araNyAnAm adhvani nivezAn yavasa indhana udaka vazena parisaMkhyAya sthAna Asana gamana kAlaM ca yAtrAM yAyAt ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतत् प्रतीकार द्वि गुणं भक्त उपकरणं वाहयेत् ॥
Food-stuffs and provisions should be carried in double the quantity that may be required in any emergency.
english translation
tat pratIkAra dvi guNaM bhakta upakaraNaM vAhayet ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअशक्तो वा सैन्येष्व् आयोजयेत्, अन्तरेषु वा निचिनुयात् ॥
In the absence of separate means to carry food-stuffs, the army itself should be entrusted with the business of carrying them; or they may be stored in a central place.

azakto vA sainyeSv Ayojayet, antareSu vA nicinuyAt ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपुरस्तान् नायकः, मध्ये कलत्रं स्वामी च, पार्श्वयोर् अश्वा बाहु उत्सारः, चक्र अन्तेषु हस्तिनः प्रसार वृद्धिर् वा, पश्चात् सेना पतिर् यायात् निविशेत ॥
In front the leader (náyaka); in the centre the harem and the master (the king); on the sides horses and bodyguards (báhútsára); at the extremity of the (marching) circular-array, elephants and the surplus army; on all sides the army habituated to forest-life.
english translation
purastAn nAyakaH, madhye kalatraM svAmI ca, pArzvayor azvA bAhu utsAraH, cakra anteSu hastinaH prasAra vRddhir vA, pazcAt senA patir yAyAt nivizeta ॥

In every direction, the army accustomed to the forest expands its reach.
