द्वाभ्याम् उपहतो वा मण्डल अपाश्रयस् तिष्ठेत्, मध्यमम् उदासीनं वा संश्रयेत ॥
Or, having made friendship with both, he may form a Circle of States. Or, he may make an alliance with the madhyama or the neutral king;
english translation
dvAbhyAm upahato vA maNDala apAzrayas tiSThet, madhyamam udAsInaM vA saMzrayeta ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतेन सह एकम् उपगृह्य इतरम् उच्छिन्द्याद्, उभौ वा ॥
and with this help he may put down one of them or both.
english translation
tena saha ekam upagRhya itaram ucchindyAd, ubhau vA ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptद्वाभ्याम् उच्छिन्नो वा मध्यम उदासीनयोस् तत् पक्षीयाणां वा राज्ञां न्याय वृत्तिम् आश्रयेत ॥
Or when hurt by both, he may seek protection from a king of righteous character among the madhyama king, the neutral king, and their friends or equals.

dvAbhyAm ucchinno vA madhyama udAsInayos tat pakSIyANAM vA rAjJAM nyAya vRttim Azrayeta ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतुल्यानां वा यस्य प्रकृतयः सुख्येयुर् एनम्, यत्रस्थो वा शक्नुयाद् आत्मानम् उद्धर्तुम्, यत्र वा पूर्व पुरुष उचिता गतिर् आसन्नः सम्बन्धो वा, मित्राणि भूयांस्य् अतिशक्तिमन्ति वा भवेयुः ॥
or from any other king whose subjects are so disposed as to increase his happiness and peace, with whose help he may be able to recover his lost position, with whom his ancestors were in close intimacy, or blood relationship, and in whose kingdom he can find a number of powerful friends.
english translation
tulyAnAM vA yasya prakRtayaH sukhyeyur enam, yatrastho vA zaknuyAd AtmAnam uddhartum, yatra vA pUrva puruSa ucitA gatir AsannaH sambandho vA, mitrANi bhUyAMsy atizaktimanti vA bhaveyuH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptप्रियो यस्य भवेद् यो वा प्रियो अस्य कतरस् तयोः । प्रियो यस्य स तं गच्छेद् इत्य् आश्रय गतिः परा ॥
Of two powerful kings who are on amicable terms with each other, a king shall make alliance with one of them who likes him and whom he likes; this is the best way of making alliance.
english translation
priyo yasya bhaved yo vA priyo asya kataras tayoH । priyo yasya sa taM gacched ity Azraya gatiH parA ॥
