अरि साधारणं यद् वा तिष्ठेत् तद् अरितः शठम् । भेदयेद् भिन्नम् उच्छिन्द्यात् ततः शत्रुम् अनन्तरम् ॥
When a friend is as accessible to the conqueror as to the latter's enemy, the conqueror should first separate that obstinate friend from the enemy, and then destroy him, and afterwards the enemy also.
english translation
ari sAdhAraNaM yad vA tiSThet tad aritaH zaTham । bhedayed bhinnam ucchindyAt tataH zatrum anantaram ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptउदासीनं च यत् तिष्ठेत् सामन्तैस् तद् विरोधयेत् । ततो विग्रह संतप्तम् उपकारे निवेशयेत् ॥
When a friend remains neutral, the conqueror should cause him to incur the displeasure of his immediate enemies; and when he is worried in his wars with them, the conqueror should oblige him with help.
english translation
udAsInaM ca yat tiSThet sAmantais tad virodhayet । tato vigraha saMtaptam upakAre nivezayet ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअमित्रं विजिगीषुं च यत् संचरति दुर्बलम् । तद् बलेन अनुगृह्णीयाद् यथा स्यान् न परान् मुखम् ॥
When, owing to his own weakness, a friend seeks protection both from the conqueror and the latter's enemy, the conqueror should help him with the army, so that he never turns his attention elsewhere.

amitraM vijigISuM ca yat saMcarati durbalam । tad balena anugRhNIyAd yathA syAn na parAn mukham ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअपनीय ततो अन्यस्यां भूमौ वा सम्निवेशयेत् । निवेश्य पूर्वं तत्र अन्यद् दण्ड अनुग्रह हेतुना ॥
Or having, removed him from his own lands, the conqueror may keep him in another tract of land, having made some previous arrangements to punish or favour the friend.

apanIya tato anyasyAM bhUmau vA samnivezayet । nivezya pUrvaM tatra anyad daNDa anugraha hetunA ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअपकुर्यात् समर्थं वा न उपकुर्याद् यद् आपदि । उच्छिन्द्याद् एव तन् मित्रं विश्वस्य अङ्कम् उपस्थितम् ॥
Or the conqueror may harm him when he has grown powerful, or destroy him when he does nut help the conqueror in danger and when he lies on the conqueror's lap in good faith.
