मध्यमस्य आत्मा तृतीया पञ्चमी च प्रकृती प्रकृतयः ॥
THE third and the fifth states from a madhyama king are states friendly to him.
english translation
madhyamasya AtmA tRtIyA paJcamI ca prakRtI prakRtayaH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptद्वितीया चतुर्थी षष्ठी च विकृतयः ॥
while the second, the fourth, and the sixth are unfriendly.
english translation
dvitIyA caturthI SaSThI ca vikRtayaH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतच् चेद् उभयं मध्यमो अनुगृह्णीयात्, विजिगीषुर् मध्यम अनुलोमः स्यात् ॥
If the madhyama king shows favour to both of these states, the conqueror should be friendly with him.
english translation
tac ced ubhayaM madhyamo anugRhNIyAt, vijigISur madhyama anulomaH syAt ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptन चेद् अनुगृह्णीयात्, प्रकृत्य् अनुलोमः स्यात् ॥
if he does not favour them, the conqueror should be friendly with those states.

na ced anugRhNIyAt, prakRty anulomaH syAt ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptमद्यमश् चेद् विजिगीषोर् मित्रं मित्र भावि लिप्सेत, मित्रस्य आत्मनश् च मित्राण्य् उत्थाप्य मध्यमाच् च मित्राणि भेदयित्वा मित्रं त्रायेत ॥
If the madhyama king is desirous of securing the friendship of the conqueor's would-be friend, then having set his own and his friend's friends against the madhyama, and having separated the madhyama from the latter's friends, the conqueror should preserve his own friend.
english translation
madyamaz ced vijigISor mitraM mitra bhAvi lipseta, mitrasya Atmanaz ca mitrANy utthApya madhyamAc ca mitrANi bhedayitvA mitraM trAyeta ॥
