तेषां शत्रु विरोधे यन् मित्रम् एक अर्थतां व्रजेत् । शक्त्या तद् अनुगृह्णीयाद् विषहेत यया परम् ॥
Of these kings, the conqueror should, as far as possible, help that friend who has the same end in view as the conqueror in his conflict with the enemy, and thus hold the enemy at bay.
english translation
teSAM zatru virodhe yan mitram eka arthatAM vrajet । zaktyA tad anugRhNIyAd viSaheta yayA param ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptप्रसाध्य शत्रुं यन् मित्रं वृद्धं गच्छेद् अवश्यताम् । सामन्त एक अन्तराभ्यां तत् प्रकृतिभ्यां विरोधयेत् ॥
When, after having put down the enemy, and after having grown in power, a friend becomes unsubmissive, the conqueror should cause the friend to incur the displeasure of a neighbour and of the king who is next to the neighbour.
english translation
prasAdhya zatruM yan mitraM vRddhaM gacched avazyatAm । sAmanta eka antarAbhyAM tat prakRtibhyAM virodhayet ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतत् कुलीन अपरुद्धाभ्यां भूमिं वा तस्य हारयेत् । यथा वा अनुग्रह अपेक्षं वश्यं तिष्ठेत् तथा चरेत् ॥
Or the conqueror may employ a scion of the friend's family or an imprisoned prince to seize his lands; or the conqueror may so act that his friend, desirous of further help, may continue to be obedient.
english translation
tat kulIna aparuddhAbhyAM bhUmiM vA tasya hArayet । yathA vA anugraha apekSaM vazyaM tiSThet tathA caret ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptन उपकुर्याद् अमित्रं वा गच्छेद् यद् अतिकर्शितम् । तद् अहीनम् अवृद्धं च स्थापयेन् मित्रम् अर्थवित् ॥
The conqueror should never help his friend when the latter is more and more deteriorating; a politician should so keep his friend that the latter neither deteriorates nor grows in power.
english translation
na upakuryAd amitraM vA gacched yad atikarzitam । tad ahInam avRddhaM ca sthApayen mitram arthavit ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअर्थ युक्त्या चलं मित्रं संधिं यद् उपगच्छति । तस्य अपगमने हेतुं विहन्यान् न चलेद् यथा ॥
When,with the desire of getting wealth, a wandering friend (i.e., a nomadic king) makes an agreement with the conqueror, the latter should so remove the cause of the friend's flight that he never flies again.

artha yuktyA calaM mitraM saMdhiM yad upagacchati । tasya apagamane hetuM vihanyAn na caled yathA ॥
