स अपेक्षं वा "न अर्हसि मित्रम् उच्छेत्तुम्" इति वारयेत् ॥
or prevent the friend from going to the madhyama, telling him.
english translation
sa apekSaM vA "na arhasi mitram ucchettum" iti vArayet ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptउपेक्षेत वा "मण्डलम् अस्य कुप्यतु स्व पक्ष वधात्" इति ॥
or the conqueror may keep quiet, if the conqueror thinks that the Circle of States would be enraged against the friend for deserting his own party.

upekSeta vA "maNDalam asya kupyatu sva pakSa vadhAt" iti ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअमित्रम् आत्मनो वा मध्यमो लिप्सेत, कोश दण्डाभ्याम् एनम् अदृश्यमानो अनुगृह्णीयात् ॥
If the madhyama king is desirous of securing the conqueror's enemy as his friend, then the conqueror should indirectly (i.e., without being known to the madhyama) help the enemy with wealth and army.

amitram Atmano vA madhyamo lipseta, koza daNDAbhyAm enam adRzyamAno anugRhNIyAt ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptउदासीनं वा मध्यमो लिप्सेत, अस्मै साहाय्यं दद्याद् "उदासीनाद् भिद्यताम्" इति ॥
If the madhyama king desires to win the neutral king, the conqueror should sow the seeds of dissension between them.

udAsInaM vA madhyamo lipseta, asmai sAhAyyaM dadyAd "udAsInAd bhidyatAm" iti ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptमध्यम उदासीनयोर् यो मण्डलस्य अभिप्रेतस् तम् आश्रयेत ॥
Whoever of the madhyama and the neutral kings is esteemed by the Circle of States, his protection should the conqueror seek.
