देश काल अतिपत्तौ वा संधाय मध्यमेन मित्रस्य साचिव्यं कुर्यात्, दूष्येषु वा कर्म संधिम् ॥
When place and time are found unsuitable for success in the above attempt, he should, by peace, seek the friendship of one of the enemies of the madhyama king, or cause some traitors to combine against the madhyama.

कर्शनीयं वा अस्य मित्रं मध्यमो लिप्सेत, प्रतिस्तम्भयेद् एनं "अहं त्वा त्रायेय" इति आ कर्शनात् ॥
if the madhyama king is desirous of reducing the conqueror's friend, the conqueror should prevent it, and tell the friend: "I shall protect you as long as you are weak,"

कर्शितम् एनं त्रायेत ॥
and should accordingly protect him when he is poor in resources.

उच्छेदनीयं वा अस्य मित्रं मध्यमो लिप्सेत, कर्शितम् एनं त्रायेत मध्यम वृद्धि भयात् ॥
if the madhyama king desires to rout out a friend of the conqueror, the latter should protect him in his difficulties.

उच्छिन्नं वा भूम्य् अनुग्रहेण हस्ते कुर्याद् अन्यत्र अपसार भयात् ॥
or having removed him from the fear of the madhyama king, the conqueror should provide him with new lands and keep him under his (the conqueror's) protection, lest he might go elsewhere.
