"त्वं च अहं च दुर्गं कारयावहे" इति कर्म संधिः ॥
WHEN an agreement is made on the condition "Let us have a fort built," it is termed agreement for undertaking a work.
english translation
"tvaM ca ahaM ca durgaM kArayAvahe" iti karma saMdhiH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतयोर् यो दैव कृतम् अविषह्यम् अल्प व्यय आरम्भं दुर्गं कारयति सो अतिसंधत्ते ॥
Whoever of the two kings builds an impregnable fortress on a spot naturally best fitted for the purpose with less labour and expenditure overreaches the other.
english translation
tayor yo daiva kRtam aviSahyam alpa vyaya ArambhaM durgaM kArayati so atisaMdhatte ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतत्र अपि स्थल नदी पर्वत दुर्गाणाम् उत्तर उत्तरं श्रेयः ॥
Of forts such as a fort on a plain, in the centre of a river, and on a mountain, that which is mentioned later is of more advantage than the one previously mentioned.
english translation
tatra api sthala nadI parvata durgANAm uttara uttaraM zreyaH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसेतु बन्धयोर् अप्य् आहार्य उदकात् सह उदकः श्रेयान् ॥
of irrigational works (setu-bandha), that which is of perennial water is better than that which is fed wit water drawn from other sources.
english translation
setu bandhayor apy AhArya udakAt saha udakaH zreyAn ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसह उदकयोर् अपि प्रभूत वाप स्थानः श्रेयान् ॥
and of works containing perennial water, that which can irrigate an extensive area is better.

saha udakayor api prabhUta vApa sthAnaH zreyAn ॥
