खनक आकाश योधिभ्यः खनकेभ्यो भूमि लाभः श्रेयान् ॥

Of the two enemies, one fighting from ditches and another from heights (khanakákásayodhibhyám), seizing land from the former is better.

खनका हि खातेन शस्त्रेण च उभयथा युध्यन्ते, शस्त्रेण एव आकाश योधिनः ॥

for they can be serviceable inasmuch as they fight from ditches and with weapons in hand, whereas the latter can only fight with weapons in hand.

एवं विध्येभ्यः पृथिवीं लभमानो अर्थ शास्त्रवित् । संहितेभ्यः परेभ्यश् च विशेषम् अधिगच्छति ॥

Whoever, well-versed in the science of polity, wrests land from such and other enemies will outshine both his allies in combination with him and enemies out of combination.
