नदी पर्वत दुर्गीयाभ्यां नदी दुर्गीयाद् ब्भूमि लाभः श्रेयान् ॥
Of two kings, one owning a fort surrounded by a river, and another having mountainous fortifications, seizing the former's land is better.

nadI parvata durgIyAbhyAM nadI durgIyAd bbhUmi lAbhaH zreyAn ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptनदी दुर्गं हि हस्ति स्तम्भ संक्रम सेतु बन्ध नौभिः साध्यम् अनित्य गाम्भीर्यम् अवस्राव्य् उदकं च ॥
for a fort in the centre of a river can be assailed by a bridge formed of elephants made to stand in a row in the river or by wooden bridges, or by means of boats; and the river will not always be deep and can be emptied of its water.

nadI durgaM hi hasti stambha saMkrama setu bandha naubhiH sAdhyam anitya gAmbhIryam avasrAvy udakaM ca ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपार्वतं तु स्व् आरक्षं दुरुपरोधि कृच्छ्र आरोहणम्, भग्ने च एकस्मिन् न सर्व वधः, शिला वृक्ष प्रमोक्षश् च महा अपकारिणाम् ॥
whereas a fort on a mountain is of a self-defensive nature, and not easy to besiege or to ascend; and when one portion of the army defending it is routed out, the other portions can escape unhurt and such a fort is of immense service, as it affords facilities to throw down heaps of stone and trees over the enemy.

pArvataM tu sv ArakSaM duruparodhi kRcchra ArohaNam, bhagne ca ekasmin na sarva vadhaH, zilA vRkSa pramokSaz ca mahA apakAriNAm ॥

Which is easier, seizing land from those who fight on plains, or from those who fight from low grounds?
english translation
nimna sthala yodhibhyo nimna yodhibhyo bhUmi lAbhaH zreyAn ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptनिम्न योधिनो ह्य् उपरुद्ध देश कालाः, स्थल योधिनस् तु सर्व देश काल योधिनः ॥
Seizing the land from the latter is easier, inasmuch as they have to fight in time and space of adverse nature whereas the former can fight anywhere and at any time.
