सम्पादयत्य् असम्पन्नाः प्रकृतीर् आत्मवान् नृपः । विवृद्धाश् च अनुरक्ताश् च प्रकृतीर् हन्त्य् अनात्मवान् ॥

A wise king can make even the poor and miserable elements of his sovereignty happy and prosperous; but a wicked king will surely destroy the most prosperous and loyal elements of his kingdom.

english translation

sampAdayaty asampannAH prakRtIr AtmavAn nRpaH । vivRddhAz ca anuraktAz ca prakRtIr hanty anAtmavAn ॥

ततः स दुष्ट प्रकृतिश् चातुरन्तो अप्य् अनात्मवान् । हन्यते वा प्रकृतिभिर् याति वा द्विषतां वशम् ॥

Hence a king of unrighteous character and of vicious habits will, though he is an emperor, fall a prey either to the fury of his own subjects or to that of his enemies.

english translation

tataH sa duSTa prakRtiz cAturanto apy anAtmavAn । hanyate vA prakRtibhir yAti vA dviSatAM vazam ॥

आत्मवांस् त्व् अल्प देशो अपि युक्तः प्रकृति सम्पदा । यज्ञः पृथिवीं कृत्स्नां जयत्य् एव न हीयते ॥

But a wise king, trained in politics, will, though he possesses a small territory, conquer the whole earth with the help of the best-fitted elements of his sovereignty, and will never be defeated.

english translation

AtmavAMs tv alpa dezo api yuktaH prakRti sampadA । yajJaH pRthivIM kRtsnAM jayaty eva na hIyate ॥
