दैवान्य् अष्टौ महा भयानि अग्निर् उदकं व्याधिर् दुर्भिक्षं मूषिका व्यालाः सर्पा रक्षांसि इति ॥

THERE are eight kinds of providential visitations: They are fire, floods, pestilential diseases, famine, rats, tigers (vyáláh), serpents, and demons.

daivAny aSTau mahA bhayAni agnir udakaM vyAdhir durbhikSaM mUSikA vyAlAH sarpA rakSAMsi iti ॥

तेभ्यो जन पदं रक्षेत् ॥

From these shall the king protect his kingdom.

ग्रीष्मे बहिर् अधिश्रयणं ग्रामाः कुर्युः, दश मूली संग्रहेण अधिष्ठिता वा ॥

(Fire.) During the summer, villages shall carry on cooking operations outside. Or they shall provide themselves with the ten remedial instruments (dasamúlí).

नागरिक प्रणिधाव् अग्नि प्रतिषेधो व्याख्यातः, निशान्त प्रणिधौ राज परिग्रहे च ॥

Precautionary measures against fire have been dealt with in connection with the description not only of the duties of superintendents of villages, but also of the king's, harem and retinue.

nAgarika praNidhAv agni pratiSedho vyAkhyAtaH, nizAnta praNidhau rAja parigrahe ca ॥

बलि होम स्वस्ति वाचनैः पर्वसु च अग्नि पूजाः कारयेत् ॥

Not only on ordinary days, but also on full-moon days shall offerings, oblations, and prayers be made to fire.
