तीर्थ उपरोधो हि धर्म वध इति कौटिल्यः ॥ इति ह्रस्व प्रवासः ॥

for neglect of intercourse with wife after her monthly ablution is, in the opinion of Kautilya, a violation of one's duty (tirthoparodho hi dharmavadha iti Kautilyah).

english translation

tIrtha uparodho hi dharma vadha iti kauTilyaH ॥ iti hrasva pravAsaH ॥

दीर्घ प्रवासिनः प्रव्रजितस्य प्रेतस्य वा भार्या सप्त तीर्थान्य् आकाङ्क्षेत, संवत्सरं प्रजाता ॥

In the case of husbands who have long gone abroad (dirgrhapravásinah), who have become ascetics, or who have been dead, their wives, having no issue, shall wait for them for the period of seven menses; but if they have given birth to children, they shall wait for a year.

english translation

dIrgha pravAsinaH pravrajitasya pretasya vA bhAryA sapta tIrthAny AkAGkSeta, saMvatsaraM prajAtA ॥

ततः पति सोदर्यं गच्छेत् ॥

Then (each of these women) may marry the brother of her husband.

tataH pati sodaryaM gacchet ॥

बहुषु प्रत्यासन्नं धार्मिकं भर्म समर्थं कनिष्ठम् अभार्यं वा ॥

If there are a number of brothers to her lost husband, she shall marry such a one of them as is next in age to her former husband, or as is virtuous and is capable of protecting her, or one who is the youngest and unmarried.

bahuSu pratyAsannaM dhArmikaM bharma samarthaM kaniSTham abhAryaM vA ॥

तद् अभावे अप्य् असोदर्यं सपिण्डं कुल्यं वा आसन्नम् ॥

If there are no brothers to her lost husband, she may marry one who belongs to the same gotra as her husband's or relative.
