देश काल अतिपत्तौ वा स्वयं गृहीत्वा उपहरेत् ॥
If time or place does not permit this action, the owner himself shall catch hold of the offender and bring him before the judges.

धर्मस्थश् च स्वामिनम् अनुयुञ्जीत "कुतस् ते लब्धम्" इति ॥
The judge shall put the question; how the offender came by the property.

स चेद् आचार क्रमं दर्शयेत, न विक्रेतारं, तस्य द्रव्यस्य अतिसर्गेण मुच्येत ॥
if he narrates how he got it, but cannot produce the person who sold it to him, he shall be left off, and shall forfeit the property.

विक्रेता चेद् दृश्येत, मूल्यं स्तेय दण्डं च दद्यात् ॥
But the seller, if produced, shall not only pay the value of the property, but also be liable to the punishment for theft.

स चेद् अपसारम् अधिगच्छेद् अपसरेद् आ अपसार क्षयात् ॥
If a person with a stolen property in his possession runs away or hides himself till the property is wholly consumed,
