तस्य पूर्वः पूर्वः श्रेयान् उपसम्प्राप्तुम् ॥
Of these, it is better to secure that which is mentioned first than that which is subsequently mentioned in the order of enumeration.

tasya pUrvaH pUrvaH zreyAn upasamprAptum ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअनर्थो अधर्मः शोक इत्य् अनर्थ त्रि वर्गः ॥
Harm, sin and grief form the aggregate, of the three kinds of harm.

anartho adharmaH zoka ity anartha tri vargaH ॥

Of these, it is better to provide against that which is mentioned first, than that which is subsequently mentioned.

tasya pUrvaH pUrvaH zreyAn pratikartum ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअर्थो अनर्थ इति, धर्मो अधर्म इति, कामः शोक इति संशय त्रि वर्गः ॥
Wealth or harm, virtue or sin, and enjoyment or grief, are the aggregate of the three kinds of doubts.

artho anartha iti, dharmo adharma iti, kAmaH zoka iti saMzaya tri vargaH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतस्य उत्तर पक्ष सिद्धौ पूर्व पक्षः श्रेयान् उपसम्प्राप्तुम् ॥
Of these, it is better to try that which is mentioned first than that which is mentioned later in the order of enumeration, and which it is certain to shake off.
