जानपदम् एक अर्थ उपगतं तुल्य संघर्ष अमर्ष सिद्धि लाभं च श्रेणी बलं मित्र बलात् श्रेयः ॥
That corporation of soldiers which is native, which has the same end in view (as the king), and which is actuated with similar feelings of rivalry, anger, and expectation of success and gain, is better than the army of a friend.
english translation
jAnapadam eka artha upagataM tulya saMgharSa amarSa siddhi lAbhaM ca zreNI balaM mitra balAt zreyaH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअपरिमित देश कालम् एक अर्थ उपगमाच् च मित्र बलम् अमित्र बलात् श्रेयः ॥
Even that corporation of soldiers which is further removed in place and time is, in virtue of its having the same end in view, better than the army of a friend.
english translation
aparimita deza kAlam eka artha upagamAc ca mitra balam amitra balAt zreyaH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptआर्य अधिष्ठितम् अमित्र बलम् अटवी बलात् श्रेयः ॥
The army of an enemy under the leadership of an Arya is better than the army of wild tribes.
english translation
Arya adhiSThitam amitra balam aTavI balAt zreyaH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतद् उभयं विलोप अर्थम् ॥
Both of them (the army of an enemy and of wild tribes) are anxious for plunder.
english translation
tad ubhayaM vilopa artham ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअविलोपे व्यसने च ताभ्याम् अहि भयं स्यात् ॥
In the absence of plunder and under troubles, they prove as dangerous as a lurking snake.
