भार्या व्यञ्जना वा महा मात्रं ब्रूयात् "राजा किल माम् अवरोधयिष्यति, तव अन्तिकाय पत्त्र लेख्यम् आभरणं च इदं परिव्राजिकया आहृतम्" इति ॥

or a woman, disguised as the minister's wife, may tell him that, "The king is troubling me; and an ascetic woman has brought to me this letter and jewellery."

english translation

bhAryA vyaJjanA vA mahA mAtraM brUyAt "rAjA kila mAm avarodhayiSyati, tava antikAya pattra lekhyam AbharaNaM ca idaM parivrAjikayA AhRtam" iti ॥

सूद आरालिक व्यञ्जनो वा रस प्रयोग अर्थं राज वचनम् अर्थं च अस्य लोभनीयम् अभिनयेत् ॥

Spies, under the guise of cooks, may, under the pretence of the king's (the enemy's) order, take some covetable wealth (to the minister) meant for use in an immediate expedition.

sUda ArAlika vyaJjano vA rasa prayoga arthaM rAja vacanam arthaM ca asya lobhanIyam abhinayet ॥

तद् अस्य वैदेहक व्यञ्जनः प्रतिसंदध्यात्, कार्य सिद्धिं च ब्रूयात् ॥

A spy under the guise of a merchant may, by some contrivance or other, take possession of that wealth and inform the minister of the readiness of all the preparations (for the expedition).

एवम् एकेन द्वाभ्यां त्रिभिर् इत्य् उपायैर् एक एकम् अस्य महा मात्रं विक्रमाय अपगमनाय वा योजयेत् इति ॥

Thus by the employment of one, two, or three of the strategic means, the ministers of each of the combined enemies may be induced to set out on the expedition and thus to be away from the inimical kings.

evam ekena dvAbhyAM tribhir ity upAyair eka ekam asya mahA mAtraM vikramAya apagamanAya vA yojayet iti ॥

दुर्गेषु च अस्य शून्य पाल आसन्नाः सत्त्रिणः पौर जानपदेषु मैत्री निमित्तम् आवेदयेयुः "शून्य पालेन उक्ता योधाश् च अधिकरणस्थाश् च "कृच्छ्र गतो राजा जीवन्न् आगमिष्यति, न वा, प्रसह्य वित्तम् आर्जयध्वम्, अमित्रांश् च हत" इति ॥

Spies, under the service of the officer in charge of the enemy's waste lands, may inform the citizens and country people residing in the enemy's fortified towns of the condition of the officer's friendship with the people, and say: "The officer in charge of the waste lands tells the warriors and departmental officers thus:--'The king has hardly escaped from danger and scarcely returns with life. Do not hoard up your wealth and thereby create enemies.

durgeSu ca asya zUnya pAla AsannAH sattriNaH paura jAnapadeSu maitrI nimittam AvedayeyuH "zUnya pAlena uktA yodhAz ca adhikaraNasthAz ca "kRcchra gato rAjA jIvann AgamiSyati, na vA, prasahya vittam Arjayadhvam, amitrAMz ca hata" iti ॥
