एतासामपो भारत्यः प्रजा नामभिरेव पुनन्तीनामात्मना चोपस्पृशन्ति ।। ५-१९-१७ ।।

Two of the rivers — the Brahmaputra and the Śoṇa — are called nadas, or main rivers. The inhabitants of Bhārata-varṣa are purified because they always remember these rivers. Sometimes they chant the names of these rivers as mantras, and sometimes they go directly to the rivers to touch them and bathe in them. Thus the inhabitants of Bhārata-varṣa become purified. ।। 5-19-17 ।।

english translation

नदियों में से दो नदियाँ—ब्रह्मपुत्र तथा शोण—नद अथवा महा नदियाँ कहलाती हैं। भारतवर्ष के वासी इन नदियों का स्मरण करने से पवित्र रहते हैं। कभी-कभी वे इन नदियों के नामों का मंत्रवत् जाप करते हैं और कभी-कभी जाकर इनका स्पर्श और इनमें स्नान भी करते हैं। इस तरह भारतवर्ष के निवासी पवित्र होते रहते हैं। ।। ५-१९-१७ ।।
