आग्नेयमुच्यते भस्म दग्धगोमयसंभवम् । तदापि द्र व्यमित्युक्तं त्रिपुंड्रस्य महामुने ६ ।

sanskrit

When dry cow-dung is reduced to ashes it is called Agneya (fiery). O great sage, for the sake of Tripuṇḍra this ash can be used.

english translation

Agneyamucyate bhasma dagdhagomayasaMbhavam | tadApi dra vyamityuktaM tripuMDrasya mahAmune 6 |

अग्निहोत्रोत्थितं भस्मसंग्राह्यं वा मनीषिभिः । अन्ययज्ञोत्थितं वापि त्रिपुण्ड्रस्य च धारणे ७ ।

The ashes resulting from Agnihotra and other sacrificial rites shall be used for the Tripuṇḍra by men seeking intellect.

english translation

agnihotrotthitaM bhasmasaMgrAhyaM vA manISibhiH | anyayajJotthitaM vApi tripuNDrasya ca dhAraNe 7 |

अग्निरित्यादिभिर्मंत्रैर्जाबालोपनिषद्गतेः । सप्तभिधूलनं कार्यं भस्मना सजलेन च ८ ।

sanskrit

When the ashes are put on the forehead or smeared with water, the seven mantras “Agni[1]” etc. mentioned in the Jābālopaniṣad, shall be recited.

agnirityAdibhirmaMtrairjAbAlopaniSadgateH | saptabhidhUlanaM kAryaM bhasmanA sajalena ca 8 |

वर्णानामाश्रमाणां च मंत्रतो मंत्रतोपि च । त्रिपुंड्रोद्धूलनं प्रोक्तजाबालैरादरेण च ९ ।

sanskrit

People of all varṇas and Āśramas shall put on Tripuṇḍra on the forehead or dust their bodies with the mantras mentioned in the Jābāla-Upaniṣad or if no mantra is used they shall do the same with reverence.

varNAnAmAzramANAM ca maMtrato maMtratopi ca | tripuMDroddhUlanaM proktajAbAlairAdareNa ca 9 |

भस्मनोद्धूलनं चैव यथा तिर्यक्!त्रिपुंड्रकम् । प्रमादादपि मोक्षार्थी न त्यजेदिति विश्रुतिः 1.24.१० ।

sanskrit

Dusting with the holy ashes and smearing the Tripuṇḍra in horizontal parallel lines shall not be abandoned by those who seek salvation. Śruti lays down that they shall not get negligent.

english translation

bhasmanoddhUlanaM caiva yathA tiryak!tripuMDrakam | pramAdAdapi mokSArthI na tyajediti vizrutiH 1.24.10 |
