सूत उवाच ।। अंतर्हिते हरौ विप्रा नारदो मुनिसत्तमः ।। विचचार महीं पश्यञ्छिवलिंगानि भक्तितः ।। १ ।।

Sūta said: O brahmins, when Viṣṇu vanished, the excellent sage Nārada roamed over the Earth seeing Śiva Liṅgas (in the various holy centres) with piety.

english translation

sUta uvAca || aMtarhite harau viprA nArado munisattamaH || vicacAra mahIM pazyaJchivaliMgAni bhaktitaH || 1 ||

पृथिव्या अटनं कृत्वा शिवरूपाण्यनेकशः ।। ददर्श प्रीतितो विप्रा भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदानि सः ।। २ ।।

In the course of his wanderings over the Earth, O brahmins, with his mind full of devotional pleasure he saw many forms of Śiva that confer worldly pleasures and salvation on the devotees.

english translation

pRthivyA aTanaM kRtvA zivarUpANyanekazaH || dadarza prItito viprA bhuktimuktipradAni saH || 2 ||

अथ तं विचरंतं कौ नारदं दिव्यदर्शनम् ।। ज्ञात्वा शंभुगणौ तौ तु सुचित्तमुपजग्मतुः ।। ३ ।।

On knowing that Nārada of divine vision was wandering over the Earth, the two attendants of Śiva approached him who by that time had become pure in mind.

english translation

atha taM vicaraMtaM kau nAradaM divyadarzanam || jJAtvA zaMbhugaNau tau tu sucittamupajagmatuH || 3 ||

शिरसा सुप्रणम्याशु गणावूचतुरादरात् ।। गृहीत्वा चरणौ तस्य शापोद्धारेच्छया च तौ ।। ४ ।।

They bowed to him and touched his feet. With a desire to secure release from the curse they spoke to him respectfully.

english translation

zirasA supraNamyAzu gaNAvUcaturAdarAt || gRhItvA caraNau tasya zApoddhArecchayA ca tau || 4 ||

शिवगणावूचतुः ।। ब्रह्मपुत्र सुरर्षे हि शृणु प्रीत्या वयोर्वचः ।। तवापराधकर्तारावावां विप्रौ न वस्तुतः ।। ५ ।।

The attendants of Śiva said: O celestial sage, son of Brahmā, please hear our words. We who formerly offended you are really not brahmins.

english translation

zivagaNAvUcatuH || brahmaputra surarSe hi zRNu prItyA vayorvacaH || tavAparAdhakartArAvAvAM viprau na vastutaH || 5 ||
