एवं विचरितं कालं महावीरावुभावपि ।। विष्णुश्चापि गणश्चैव युयुधाते परस्परम् ।।३१।।

Thus for a long time the two heroes Viṣṇu and Gaṇeśa fought with each other.

पुनर्वीरवरश्शक्तिसुतस्स्मृतशिवो बली ।। गृहीत्वा यष्टिमतुलां तया विष्णुं जघान ह ।।३२।।

Again the foremost among heroes, the son of Pārvatī took up his staff of unrivalled power remembering Śiva and struck Viṣṇu with it.

अविषह्य प्रहारं तं स भूमौ निपपात ह ।। द्रुतमुत्थाय युयुधे शिवापुत्रेण तेन वै ।। ३३ ।।

Struck with that unbearable blow he fell on the ground. But he got up, quickly and fought with Pārvatī’s son.

aviSahya prahAraM taM sa bhUmau nipapAta ha || drutamutthAya yuyudhe zivAputreNa tena vai || 33 ||

एतदंतरमासाद्य शूलपाणिस्तथोत्तरे ।। आगत्य च त्रिशूलेन तच्छिरो निरकृंतत ।।३४।।

Securing this opportunity, the Trident-bearing deity came there and cut off his head with his trident.

O Nārada, when the head of Gaṇeśa was cut off, the armies of the gods and the Gaṇas stood still.
