ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ शिवः को वा हरिः को वा रुद्रः को वा विधिश्च कः ॥ एतेषु निर्गुणः को वा ह्येतं नश्छिन्धि संशयम् ॥ १ ॥
The sages said:— Who is Śiva? Who is Viṣṇu? Who is Rudra? Who is Brahmā? Of these who is Nirguṇa? Please clear this doubt of ours.
english translation
सूत उवाच ॥ यच्चादौ हि समुत्पन्नं निर्गुणात्परमात्मनः ॥ तदेव शिवसंज्ञं हि वेदवेदांतिनो विदुः ॥ २ ॥
Sūta said:— Masters of the Vedas and Vedānta know that which originates from the Nirguṇa great soul as the one termed Śiva.
english translation
तस्मात्प्रकृतिरुत्पन्ना पुरुषेण समन्विता ॥ ताभ्यान्तपः कृतं तत्र मूलस्थे च जले सुधीः ॥ ३ ॥
From that nature arose and was united with the Purusha. They both performed austerities in the water at the root of the river.
english translation
पञ्चकोशीति विख्याता काशी सर्वातिवल्लभा ॥ व्याप्तं च सकलं ह्येतत्तज्जलं विश्वतो गतम् ॥ ४ ॥
Kāśī is known as Panchakośī and is the most dear to all The whole universe is pervaded by that water which has spread all over the world.
english translation
संभाव्य मायया युक्तस्तत्र सुप्तो हरिस्स वै ॥ नारायणेति विख्यातः प्रकृतिर्नारायणी मता ॥ ५ ॥
Viṣṇu famous as Nārāyaṇa slept there enveloped by Māyā. The Prakṛti is known as Nārāyaṇī (belonging to Nārāyaṇa.)
