ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ सूत ते वचनं श्रुत्वा परानन्दं वयं गताः ॥ विस्तरात्कथय प्रीत्या तदेव व्रतमुत्तमम् ॥ १ ॥
The sages said:— O Sūta, we are extremely delighted on hearing your words. Please narrate the excellent Vrata in detail.
english translation
कृतं पुरा तु केनेह सूतैतद्व्रतमुत्तमम् ॥ कृत्वाप्यज्ञानतश्चैव प्राप्तं किं फलमुत्तमम् ॥ २ ॥
O Sūta, by whom was this excellent Vrata performed formerly? Was an excellent benefit derived by any by performing it without full knowledge?
english translation
॥ सूत उवाच ॥ श्रूयतामृषयस्सर्वे कथयामि पुरातनम्॥ इतिहासं निषादस्य सर्वपापप्रणाशनम् ॥ ३ ॥
Sūta said:— May this be heard, O sages. I shall narrate the ancient story of the hunter which destroys all sins.
english translation
पुरा कश्चिद्वने भिल्लो नाम्ना ह्यासीद्गुरुद्रुहः॥ कुटुम्बी बलवान्क्रूरः क्रूरकर्मपरायणः ॥ ४॥
Formerly there was a hunter in a forest, Gurudruha by name. He had a large family. He was strong, ruthless and engaged in cruel activities.
english translation
निरन्तरं वने गत्वा मृगान्हन्ति स्म नित्यशः ॥ चौर्य्यं च विविधं तत्र करोति स्म वने वसन् ॥ ५ ॥
Everyday he used to go to the forest incessantly and kill deer. There in the forest he committed thefts also in various ways.
