सूत उवाच।। साधु पृष्ठमृषिश्रेष्ठाः कथयामि कथां शुभाम् ।। यां कथां सततं श्रुत्वा पातकैर्मुच्यते ध्रुवम् ।। ६।।

Sūta said:— O great sages, you have put the question well. I shall narrate the story on hearing which constantly one is relieved of sins.

english translation

sUta uvAca|| sAdhu pRSThamRSizreSThAH kathayAmi kathAM zubhAm || yAM kathAM satataM zrutvA pAtakairmucyate dhruvam || 6||

दक्षिणस्यां दिशि महत् कामदं नाम यद्वनम् ।। चित्रकूटसमीपेस्ति तपसां हितदं सताम् ।। ७।।

In the southern direction there is a large forest called Kamada. It is situated near Chitrakuta and is beneficial to the virtuous for their austerities.

dakSiNasyAM dizi mahat kAmadaM nAma yadvanam || citrakUTasamIpesti tapasAM hitadaM satAm || 7||

तत्र च ब्रह्मणः पुत्रो ह्यत्रिनामा ऋषिः स्वयम् ।। तपस्तेपेऽति कठिनमनसूयासमन्वितः ।। ८ ।।

There was a sage named Hyatri himself, the son of Brahma. He performed very difficult austerities without envy.

tatra ca brahmaNaH putro hyatrinAmA RSiH svayam || tapastepe'ti kaThinamanasUyAsamanvitaH || 8 ||

पूर्वं कदाचित्तत्रैव ह्यनावृष्टिरभून्मुने ।। दुःखदा प्राणिनां दैवाद्विकटा शतवार्षिकी ।। ९।।

O sage, formerly once, there was a great draught there, extending to a hundred years which put all living beings to distress.

english translation

pUrvaM kadAcittatraiva hyanAvRSTirabhUnmune || duHkhadA prANinAM daivAdvikaTA zatavArSikI || 9||

वृक्षाश्शुष्कास्तदा सर्वे पल्लवानि फलानि च ।। नित्यार्थं न जलं क्वापि दृष्टमासीन्मुनीश्वराः।। १०।।

O great sages, the trees became dry then without sprouts or fruits. No water was seen anywhere even for daily routine work.

english translation

vRkSAzzuSkAstadA sarve pallavAni phalAni ca || nityArthaM na jalaM kvApi dRSTamAsInmunIzvarAH|| 10||
