सूत उवाच ॥ अथातः संप्रवक्ष्यामि नागेशाख्यं परात्मनः ॥ ज्योतीरूपं यथा जातं परमं लिंगमुत्तमम् ॥ १ ॥
Sūta said:— Hereafter I shall explain how the extremely excellent Jyotirliṅga Nāgeśa of the supreme soul came into being.
english translation
sUta uvAca ॥ athAtaH saMpravakSyAmi nAgezAkhyaM parAtmanaH ॥ jyotIrUpaM yathA jAtaM paramaM liMgamuttamam ॥ 1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptदारुका राक्षसी काचित्पार्वती वरदर्पिता ॥ दारुकश्च पतिस्तस्या बभूव बलवत्तरः ॥ २ ॥
There was a certain ogress Dārukā who became arrogant by the boon granted by Pārvatī. Her husband Dāruka was also very powerful.

dArukA rAkSasI kAcitpArvatI varadarpitA ॥ dArukazca patistasyA babhUva balavattaraH ॥ 2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptबहुभी राक्षसैस्तत्र चकार कदनं सताम् ॥ यज्ञध्वंसं च लोकानां धर्मध्वंसं तदाकरोत् ॥ ३ ॥
Along with many Rākṣasas he tormented the good. He destroyed their sacrifices and spoiled their rites.
english translation
bahubhI rAkSasaistatra cakAra kadanaM satAm ॥ yajJadhvaMsaM ca lokAnAM dharmadhvaMsaM tadAkarot ॥ 3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपश्चिमे सागरे तस्य वनं सर्वसमृद्धिमत् ॥ योजनानां षोडशभिर्विस्तृतं सर्वतो दिशम् ॥ ४ ॥
His fertile and flourishing forest was on the shores of the Western ocean. It extended to sixteen Yojanas in every direction.
english translation
pazcime sAgare tasya vanaM sarvasamRddhimat ॥ yojanAnAM SoDazabhirvistRtaM sarvato dizam ॥ 4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptदारुका स्वविलासार्थं यत्र गच्छति तद्वनम् ॥ भूम्या च तरुभिस्तत्र सर्वोपकरणैर्युतम् ॥ ५ ॥
Wherever Dārukā went in that forest for her sportive pleasure, the land in that spot acquired all requisites and became full of trees.

dArukA svavilAsArthaM yatra gacchati tadvanam ॥ bhUmyA ca tarubhistatra sarvopakaraNairyutam ॥ 5 ॥
