रक्षःकृतं च विज्ञाय तदैवं स गुरुस्तदा ।। पुनर्विमृश्य तं शापं चकार द्वादशाब्दिकम् ।। ११ ।।

On realising that it had been perpetrated by the demon, the preceptor pondered over and prescribed a timelimit of twelve years for the curse.

rakSaHkRtaM ca vijJAya tadaivaM sa gurustadA || punarvimRzya taM zApaM cakAra dvAdazAbdikam || 11 ||

स राजानुचितं शापं विज्ञाय क्रोधमूर्छितः ।। जलांजलिं समादाय गुरुं शप्तुं समुद्यतः ।। १२ ।।

Thinking that the curse was unjustified, the infuriated king was about to return the curse with a handful of water.

sa rAjAnucitaM zApaM vijJAya krodhamUrchitaH || jalAMjaliM samAdAya guruM zaptuM samudyataH || 12 ||

तदा च तत्प्रिया साध्वी मदयन्ती सुधर्मिणी ।। पतित्वा पादयोस्तस्य शापं तं हि न्यवारयत् ।। १३ ।।

Then the chaste and virtuous queen Madayantī fell at his feet and entreated him to spare the curse.

tadA ca tatpriyA sAdhvI madayantI sudharmiNI || patitvA pAdayostasya zApaM taM hi nyavArayat || 13 ||

ततो निवृत्तशापस्तु तस्या वचनगौरवात् ।। तत्याज पादयोरंभः पादौ कल्मषतां गतौ ।। १४ ।।

Out of deference for her entreaties the king desisted from cursing, but dropped the handful of water on his own feet which became deformed.

tato nivRttazApastu tasyA vacanagauravAt || tatyAja pAdayoraMbhaH pAdau kalmaSatAM gatau || 14 ||

ततःप्रभृति राजाभूत्स लोकेस्मिन्मुनीश्वराः ।। कल्मषांघ्रिरिति ख्यातः प्रभावात्तज्जलस्य हि ।। १५ ।।

O great sages, from that day onwards the king became famous in the world as Kalmāṣāṅghri by the virtue of that water.
