सूत उवाच ॥ श्रीमतीक्ष्वाकुवंशे हि राजा परमधार्मिकः ॥ आसीन्मित्रसहो नाम श्रेष्ठस्सर्वधनुष्मताम् ॥ १ ॥
Sūta said:— There was a highly virtuous king Mitrasaha in the glorious family of Ikṣvāku. He was the greatest of skilled archers.
english translation
sUta uvAca ॥ zrImatIkSvAkuvaMze hi rAjA paramadhArmikaH ॥ AsInmitrasaho nAma zreSThassarvadhanuSmatAm ॥ 1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतस्य राज्ञः सुधर्मिष्ठा मदयन्ती प्रिया शुभा॥ दमयन्ती नलस्येव बभूव विदिता सती ॥ २ ॥
The virtuous and auspicious-natured lady Madayantī was his beloved wife, like Damayantī of Nala. She was known as a chaste lady.
english translation
tasya rAjJaH sudharmiSThA madayantI priyA zubhA॥ damayantI nalasyeva babhUva viditA satI ॥ 2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस एकदा हि मृगयास्नेही मित्रसहो नृपः ॥ महद्बलेन संयुक्तो जगाम गहनं वनम् ॥ ३ ॥
Fond of hunting, once that king Mitrasaha went to a thick forest accompanied by a huge army.

sa ekadA hi mRgayAsnehI mitrasaho nRpaH ॥ mahadbalena saMyukto jagAma gahanaM vanam ॥ 3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptविहरंस्तत्र स नृपः कमठाह्वं निशाचरम् ॥ निजघान महादुष्टं साधुपीडाकरं खलम् ॥ ४ ॥
Sporting about there, the king killed a wicked demon Kamaṭha who used to harass good men.

viharaMstatra sa nRpaH kamaThAhvaM nizAcaram ॥ nijaghAna mahAduSTaM sAdhupIDAkaraM khalam ॥ 4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअथ तस्यानुजः पापी जयेयं छद्मनैव तम्॥ मत्वा जगाम नृपतेरन्तिक च्छद्मकारकः ॥ ५॥
The demon’s younger brother, a deceitful sinner thought “I shall conquer him by deceitful means” and with this evil intention approached the king.
