यत्रयत्र यदा शंभुर्भक्त्या भक्तैश्च संस्मृतः ॥ तत्रतत्रावतीर्याथ कार्यं कृत्वा स्थितस्तदा ॥ १६ ॥
Śiva incarnates in those places wherever he is devoutly remembered by the devotees. After carrying out their task he stations himself there.
english translation
yatrayatra yadA zaMbhurbhaktyA bhaktaizca saMsmRtaH ॥ tatratatrAvatIryAtha kAryaM kRtvA sthitastadA ॥ 16 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptलोकानामुपकारार्थं स्वलिंगं चाप्यकल्पयत्॥ तल्लिंगं पूजयित्वा तु सिद्धिं समधिगच्छति॥ १७॥
He has assigned his phallic form for the benefit of the worlds. The devotee attains perfection by worshipping that form.
english translation
lokAnAmupakArArthaM svaliMgaM cApyakalpayat॥ talliMgaM pUjayitvA tu siddhiM samadhigacchati॥ 17॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपृथिब्यां यानि लिंगानि तेषां संख्या न विद्यते ॥ तथापि च प्रधानानि कथ्यते च मया द्विजाः ॥ १८॥
O noble ascetics, there is no limit to the number of his phallic images on the earth. Still I narrate the important ones.
english translation
pRthibyAM yAni liMgAni teSAM saMkhyA na vidyate ॥ tathApi ca pradhAnAni kathyate ca mayA dvijAH ॥ 18॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptप्रधानेषु च यानीह मुख्यानि प्रवदाम्यहम्॥ यच्छ्रुत्वा सर्वपापेभ्यो मुच्यते मानवः क्षणात्॥ १९॥
Even among the important ones, I shall enumerate the principal ones, on hearing which a man instantly gets rid of his sins.
english translation
pradhAneSu ca yAnIha mukhyAni pravadAmyaham॥ yacchrutvA sarvapApebhyo mucyate mAnavaH kSaNAt॥ 19॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptज्योतिर्लिंगानि यानीह मुख्यमुख्यानि सत्तम॥ तान्यहं कथयाम्यद्य श्रुत्वा पापं व्यपोहति॥ २०॥
O excellent one, I shall mention the most important of the Jyotirliṅgas on hearing which a person becomes sinless.
english translation
jyotirliMgAni yAnIha mukhyamukhyAni sattama॥ tAnyahaM kathayAmyadya zrutvA pApaM vyapohati॥ 20॥
