नमः शिवाय साम्बाय सगणाय ससूनवे॥ प्रधानपुरुषेशाय सर्गस्थितत्यन्तहेतवे ॥ १ ॥
Obeisance to Śiva accompanied by Ambā, his sons and the Gaṇas, obeisance to the lord of Pradhāna and Puruṣa, obeisance to him who is the cause of creation, sustenance and dissolution.
english translation
ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ श्रुतोमासंहिता रम्या नानाख्यानसमन्विता ॥ कैलाससंहिताम्ब्रूहि शिवतत्त्वविवर्द्धिनीम्॥ २ ॥
The sages said:— The beautiful Umāsaṃhitā full of various anecdotes we have heard. Now narrate the Kailāsasaṃhitā that propagates Śiva’s tenets.
english translation
व्यास उवाच ॥ ॥ शृणुत प्रीतितो वत्साः कैलासाख्यां हि संहिताम् ॥ शिवतत्त्वपरान्दिव्यां वक्ष्ये वः स्नेहतः पराम्॥ ३॥
Vyāsa said:— O dear, now listen with pleasure. Out of affection for you I shall narrate the divine Saṃhitā Kailāsa expounding Śiva’s tenets.
english translation
हिमवच्छिखरे पूर्व्वं तपस्यन्तो महौजसः ॥ वाराणसीङ्गन्तुकामा मुनयः कृतसम्विदः ॥ ४ ॥
Formerly the sages of great power and splendour performing penances on the summit of Himavat desired to go to Vārāṇasī and decided accordingly.
english translation
निर्गत्य तस्मात्सम्प्राप्य गिरेः काशीं समाहिताः ॥ स्नातव्यमेवेति तदा ददृशुर्मणिकर्णिकाम्॥ ५॥
They started from the mountain and reached Kāśī. They decided to bathe there and saw Maṇikarṇikā.
