जाते कुमारे सति पूर्वमार्यै रायुर्विचिन्त्यं हि ततः फलानि । विचारणीया गुणिनि स्थितेतद् गुणाः समस्थाः खलु लक्षणज्ञैः ॥ १॥
The first thing that ought to be done by the elders when a son is born is the determining of the longevity or otherwise, and then only of the other effects. If the nativity be found to possess also some merits, they ought to be investigated with the help of persons proficient in the science of Astrology.

jAte kumAre sati pUrvamAryai rAyurvicintyaM hi tataH phalAni । vicAraNIyA guNini sthitetad guNAH samasthAH khalu lakSaNajJaiH ॥ 1॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकेचिद्यथाधानविलग्नमन्ये शीर्षोदयं भूपतनं हि केचित् । होराविदश्चितनकाययोन्योर्वियोगकालं कथयन्ति लग्नम् ॥ २॥
As regards the correct determining of the Lagna of birth, some opine that it is the time of Adhana or impregnation; others say that it is the time when the head (of the infant) emerges; some others say that it is the time when the child (falls to) touches the ground; while other experts in Astrology hold that it is the time when the child gets itself completely separated from the mother's womb.

kecidyathAdhAnavilagnamanye zIrSodayaM bhUpatanaM hi kecit । horAvidazcitanakAyayonyorviyogakAlaM kathayanti lagnam ॥ 2॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptआद्वादशाब्दान्नरयोनिजन्मना- मायुष्कला निश्चयितुं न शक्यते मात्रा च पित्रा कृतपापकर्मण बालग्रहैर्नशमुपैति बालकः ॥ ३॥
In the case of viviparous creatures, it is not possible to determine the period of life within the first twelve years. In consequence of the sinful acts of the parents (whether in this or in a previous birth), the child meets with destruction being seized by demons called Balagrahas.

AdvAdazAbdAnnarayonijanmanA- mAyuSkalA nizcayituM na zakyate mAtrA ca pitrA kRtapApakarmaNa bAlagrahairnazamupaiti bAlakaH ॥ 3॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptआद्ये चतुष्के जननीकृताघै- र्मध्ये च पित्रार्जितपापसङ्घैः । बालस्तदन्त्यासु चतुःशरत्सु स्वकीयदोषैः समुपैति नाशम् ॥ ४॥
If the child dies in the first four years, it is because of the mother's sins. If in the middle four years, it is owing to the accumulated sins of the father. If it comes by its death in the last four years, it must be due to its own sins (in a previous birth)

hk transliteration by Sanscriptतद्दोषशान्त्यै प्रतिजन्मतार- माद्वदशाब्दं जपहोमपूर्वम् । आयुष्करं कर्म विधाय ताता बालं चिकित्सादिभिरेव तक्षेत् ॥ ५॥
In order to ward off the evil effects enunciated above, the father should arrange for the performance of religious rites preceded by the incantations of Mantras and offerings of oblations by the pouring of ghee into consecrated fire on every birthday of the child till its 12 th year; supplementing these with suitable medical treatments and the like, the life of the child must be promoted and the child protected.
