ऋषयः ऊचुः - भावानां च रसां च समुत्थानं यथाक्रमम् । त्वत्प्रसादाच्छ्रुतं सर्वमिच्छामो वेदितुं पुनः ॥१॥

Through your kindness we have heard in due order everything relating to the origin of the States and Sentiments. We wish to know them again.

नाट्ये कतिविधः कार्यः तज्ज्ञैरभिनयक्रमः । कतं वाभिनयो ह्येष कतिभेदस्तु कीर्तितः ॥ २॥

We shall now like to know also what the experts say about the different kinds of Histrionic Representation, their meanings and different subdivisions.

सर्वमेतद्यथातत्त्वं कथयस्व महामुने । यो यथाभिनयो यस्मिन् योक्तव्यः सिद्धिमिच्छता ॥ ३॥

O the blessed one, you are also to tell us accurately what kinds of Histrionic Representation are to be applied to which [places or occasions] by persons aiming at Success.

तेषां तु वचनं श्रुत्वा मुनीनां भरतो मुनिः । प्रत्युवाच पुनर्वाक्यं चतुरोऽभिनयान् प्रति ॥ ४॥

On these words of the sages, Bharata spoke thus relating to the four kinds of Histrionic Representation.
