कुसीदवृद्धिर्द्वैगुण्यं नात्येति सकृदाहृता । धान्ये सदे लवे वाह्ये नातिक्रामति पञ्चताम् ॥ १५१ ॥

In money transactions interest paid at one time (not by instalments) shall never exceed the double (of the principal); on grain, fruit, wool or hair, (and) beasts of burden it must not be more than five times (the original amount).

english translation

kusIdavRddhirdvaiguNyaM nAtyeti sakRdAhRtA | dhAnye sade lave vAhye nAtikrAmati paJcatAm || 151 ||

कृतानुसारादधिका व्यतिरिक्ता न सिध्यति । कुसीदपथमाहुस्तं पञ्चकं शतमर्हति ॥ १५२ ॥

Stipulated interest beyond the legal rate, being against (the law), cannot be recovered; they call that a usurious way (of lending); (the lender) is (in no case) entitled to (more than) five in the hundred.

english translation

नातिसांवत्सरीं वृद्धिं न चादृष्टां पुनर्हरेत् । चक्रवृद्धिः कालवृद्धिः कारिता कायिका च या ॥ १५३ ॥

Let him not take interest beyond the year, nor such as is unapproved, nor compound interest, periodical interest, stipulated interest, and corporal interest.

english translation

nAtisAMvatsarIM vRddhiM na cAdRSTAM punarharet | cakravRddhiH kAlavRddhiH kAritA kAyikA ca yA || 153 ||

ऋणं दातुमशक्तो यः कर्तुमिच्छेत् पुनः क्रियाम् । स दत्त्वा निर्जितां वृद्धिं करणं परिवर्तयेत् ॥ १५४ ॥

He who, unable to pay a debt (at the fixed time), wishes to make a new contract, may renew the agreement, after paying the interest which is due.

english translation

RNaM dAtumazakto yaH kartumicchet punaH kriyAm | sa dattvA nirjitAM vRddhiM karaNaM parivartayet || 154 ||

अदर्शयित्वा तत्रैव हिरण्यं परिवर्तयेत् । यावती सम्भवेद् वृद्धिस्तावतीं दातुमर्हति ॥ १५५ ॥

If he cannot pay the money (due as interest), he may insert it in the renewed (agreement); he must pay as much interest as may be due.

english translation

adarzayitvA tatraiva hiraNyaM parivartayet | yAvatI sambhaved vRddhistAvatIM dAtumarhati || 155 ||
