The one who gives birth, the one who performs rituals like Yagyopavit etc., the giver of knowledge, the giver of food and the one who protects from fear; These five are considered fathers.

english translation

जन्म देनेवाला, यज्ञोपवीत आदि संस्कार करने वाला, विद्या देने वाला, अन्न देने वाला तथा भय से बचाने वाला; यह पांच पिता माने जाते हैं।
