नक्षत्रत्रयवर्गैराग्नेयाद्यैर्व्यवस्थितैर्नवधा । भारतवर्षे मध्य प्रागादिविभाजिता देशाः ॥ १४-०१ ॥
The countries of the Earth beginning from the centre of Bhāratavarṣa and going round the east, south-east, south, etc., are divided into 9 divisions corresponding to the 27 lunar asterisms at the rate of 3 for each division and beginning from Kṛttikā.

The constellations of Kṛttikā, Rohiṇī and Mṛgaśīrṣa represent the Madhyadeśa or central division consisting of the countries of Bhadrā, Arimeda, Māṇḍavya, Sālva, Nīpa, Ujjihāna, Maru, Vatsa, Ghoṣa, the countries bordering on the Yamunā and the Sarasvatī, the countries of Matsya, Mādhyamika, Māthuraka (Mathura), Upajyotiṣaka, Dharmaraṇi, Śūrasena, Gauragrīva, Uddehika, Pāṇḍu, Guḍā, Aśvattha, Pāñcāla, Sāketa, Kaṅka, Kura, Kālakoṭi, Kukura, the Pāriyatra mountains, Audumbara, Kapiṣṭhala and Gajāhvaya.

Mathurā, Kaupaja, the Jyotiṣa lands, and the sacred forests of Dharma; the Śūrasenas, the Gauragrīvas, the Uddēhikas, the Pāṇḍu-Gudas, the Aśvatthas, and the Pāñcālas.

Sāketa; the Kankas; the Kurus; the Kālakoṭis; the Kukuras; and the Pāriyātra mountain; the Audumbaras, the Kāpiṣṭhalas, and the Gajāhvayas—this constitutes the middle region.

Then, in the eastern direction are the Añjana, Vṛṣabhadhvaja, Padmamālya, and Vadgiri mountains; the Vyāghramukhas, the Suhmas, the Karvaṭas, the city of Chāndrapura, and the Śūrpakarṇas.
