अग्न्य् अगार गतः कार्यं पश्येद् वैद्य तपस्विनाम् । पुरोहित आचार्य सखः प्रत्युत्थाय अभिवाद्य च ॥

Having seated himself in the room where the sacred fire has been kept, he shall attend to the business of physicians and ascetics practising austerities; and that in company with his high priest and teacher and after preliminary salutation (to the petitioners).

english translation

agny agAra gataH kAryaM pazyed vaidya tapasvinAm । purohita AcArya sakhaH pratyutthAya abhivAdya ca ॥

तपस्विनां तु कार्याणि त्रैविद्यैः सह कारयेत् । माया योगविदां चैव न स्वयं कोप कारणात् ॥

Accompanied by persons proficient in the three sciences (trividya) but not alone lest the petitioners be offended, he shall look to the business of those who are practising austerities, as well as of those who are experts in witchcraft and Yóga.

english translation

tapasvinAM tu kAryANi traividyaiH saha kArayet । mAyA yogavidAM caiva na svayaM kopa kAraNAt ॥

राज्ञो हि व्रतम् उत्थानं यज्ञः कार्य अनुशासनम् । दक्षिणा वृत्ति साम्यं तु दीक्षा तस्य अभिषेचनम् ॥

Of a king, the religious vow is his readiness to action; satisfactory discharge of duties is his performance of sacrifice; equal attention to all is the offer of fees and ablution towards consecration.

rAjJo hi vratam utthAnaM yajJaH kArya anuzAsanam । dakSiNA vRtti sAmyaM tu dIkSA tasya abhiSecanam ॥

प्रजा सुखे सुखं राज्ञः प्रजानां च हिते हितम् । न आत्म प्रियं हितं राज्ञः प्रजानां तु प्रियं हितम् ॥

In the happiness of his subjects lies his happiness; in their welfare his welfare; whatever pleases himself he shall not consider as good, but whatever pleases his subjects he shall consider as good.

english translation

prajA sukhe sukhaM rAjJaH prajAnAM ca hite hitam । na Atma priyaM hitaM rAjJaH prajAnAM tu priyaM hitam ॥

तस्मान् नित्य उत्थितो राजा कुर्याद् अर्थ अनुशासनम् । अर्थस्य मूलम् उत्थानम् अनर्थस्य विपर्ययः ॥

Hence the king shall ever be active and discharge his duties; the root of wealth is activity, and of evil its reverse.

english translation

tasmAn nitya utthito rAjA kuryAd artha anuzAsanam । arthasya mUlam utthAnam anarthasya viparyayaH ॥
