प्रयोजनम् इष्टम् अवेक्षेत वा ॥
or he may demand a speedy settlement of his mission.

शासनम् अनिष्टम् उक्त्वा बन्ध वध भयाद् अविसृष्टो अप्य् अपगच्छेत्, अन्यथा नियम्येत ॥
Or having intimated an unfavourable order (sásana) to the enemy, and pretending apprehension of imprisonment or death, he may return even without permission; otherwise he may be punished.
english translation
प्रेषणं संधि पालत्वं प्रतापो मित्र संग्रहः । उपजापः सुहृद् भेदो गूढ दण्ड अतिसारणम् ॥
Transmission of missions, maintenance of treaties, issue of ultimatum (pratápa), gaining of friends, intrigue, sowing dissension among friends, fetching secret force.
english translation
बन्धु रत्न अपहरणं चार ज्ञानं पराक्रमः । समाधि मोक्षो दूतस्य कर्म योगस्य च आश्रयः ॥
carrying away by stealth relatives and gems, gathering information about the movements of spies, bravery, breaking of treaties of peace, winning over the favour of the envoy and government officers of the enemy,---these are the duties of an envoy (dúta).
english translation
स्व दूतैः कारयेद् एतत् पर दूतांश् च रक्षयेत् । प्रतिदूत अपसर्पाभ्यां दृश्य अदृश्यैश् च रक्षिभिः ॥
The king shall employ his own envoys to carry on works of the above description, and guard himself against (the mischief of) foreign envoys by employing counter envoys, spies, and visible and invisible watchmen.
