"पृथिव्या लाभे पालने च यावन्त्य् अर्थ शास्त्राणि पूर्व आचार्यैः प्रस्थापितानि प्रायशस् तानि संहृत्य एकम् इदम् अर्थ शास्त्रं कृतम्" इति ॥
“This Arthasástra or Science of Polity has been made as a compendium of all those Arthasástras which, as a guidance to kings in acquiring and maintaining the earth, have been written by ancient teachers.”
