वास्तुक प्रशस्ते वास्तुनि नायक वर्धकि मौहूर्तिकाः स्कन्ध आवारम्, वृत्तं दीर्घं चतुर् अश्रं वा भूमि वशेन वा, चतुर् द्वारं षट् पथं नव संस्थानं मापयेयुः खात वप्र साल द्वार अट्टालक सम्पन्नं भये स्थाने च ॥
ON a site declared to be the best according to the science of buildings, the leader (náyaka), the carpenter (vardhaki), and the astrologer (mauhúrtika) should measure a circular, rectangular, or square spot for the camp which should, in accordance with the available space, consist of four gates, six roads, and nine divisions.
english translation
vAstuka prazaste vAstuni nAyaka vardhaki mauhUrtikAH skandha AvAram, vRttaM dIrghaM catur azraM vA bhUmi vazena vA, catur dvAraM SaT pathaM nava saMsthAnaM mApayeyuH khAta vapra sAla dvAra aTTAlaka sampannaM bhaye sthAne ca ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptमध्यमस्य उत्तरे नव भागे राज वास्तुकं धनुः शत आयामम् अर्ध विस्तारम्, पश्चिम अर्धे तस्य अन्तः पुरम् ॥
Provided with ditches, parapets, walls, doors, and watch towers for defence against fear, the quarters of the king, 1,000 bows long and half as broad, should be situated in one of the nine divisions to the north from the centre, while to the west of it his harem, and at its extremity the army of the harem are to be situated.
english translation
madhyamasya uttare nava bhAge rAja vAstukaM dhanuH zata AyAmam ardha vistAram, pazcima ardhe tasya antaH puram ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअन्तर् वंशिक सैन्यं च अन्ते निविशेत ॥
The inner guard and the army should encamp at the frontier.
english translation
antar vaMzika sainyaM ca ante nivizeta ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपुरस्ताद् उपस्थानम्, दक्षिणतः कोश शासन कार्य करणानि, वामतो राज औपवाह्यानां हस्त्य् अश्व रथानां स्थानम् ॥
In his front, the place for worshipping gods; to his right the departments of finance and accounts; and to his left the quarters of elephants and horses mounted by the king himself.
english translation
purastAd upasthAnam, dakSiNataH koza zAsana kArya karaNAni, vAmato rAja aupavAhyAnAM hasty azva rathAnAM sthAnam ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअतो धनुः शत अन्तराश् चत्वारः शकट मेथी प्रतति स्तम्भ साल परिक्षेपाः ॥
Outside this and at a distance of 100 bows from each other, there should be fixed four cart-poles (sakatamedhi) pillars and walls.

ato dhanuH zata antarAz catvAraH zakaTa methI pratati stambha sAla parikSepAH ॥
