तयोर् विशेष लाभाद् अतिसंधिः ॥

tayor vizeSa lAbhAd atisaMdhiH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसम संधौ तु यः सम्पन्नं मित्रं मित्र कृच्छ्रे वा मित्रम् अवाप्नोति सो अतिसंधत्ते ॥
In an even peace (i.e., agreement on equal terms) whoever acquires a friend of good character or relieves an old friend from troubles, overreaches the other.

sama saMdhau tu yaH sampannaM mitraM mitra kRcchre vA mitram avApnoti so atisaMdhatte ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptआपद्द् हि सौहृद स्थैर्यम् उत्पादयति ॥
for help given in misfortune renders friendship very firm.

Apadd hi sauhRda sthairyam utpAdayati ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptमित्र कृच्छ्रे अपि नित्यम् अवश्यम् अनित्यं वश्यं वा इति "नित्यम् अवश्यं श्रेयः, तद्द् हि अनुपकुर्वद् अपि न अपकरोति" इत्य् आचार्याः ॥
Which is better of the two: a friend of long-standing, but unsubmissive nature, or a temporary friend of submissive nature, both being acquired by affording relief from their respective troubles? My teacher says that a long-standing friend of unsubmissive nature is better inasmuch as such a friend, though not helpful, will not create harm.

mitra kRcchre api nityam avazyam anityaM vazyaM vA iti "nityam avazyaM zreyaH, tadd hi anupakurvad api na apakaroti" ity AcAryAH ॥
