सत्त्राद् अपसरेद् यत्तः कलत्रम् अपनीय वा । समाद् अपि हि लब्ध अर्थाद् विश्वस् तस्य भयं भवेत् ॥
Though actuated with feelings of true friendship, the conqueror has reason to fear his ally, though of equal power, when the latter attains success in his mission; having succeeded in his mission, an ally of equal power is likely to change his attitude even towards the conqueror of superior power.
english translation
sattrAd apasared yattaH kalatram apanIya vA । samAd api hi labdha arthAd vizvas tasya bhayaM bhavet ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptज्यायस्त्वे च अपि लब्ध अर्थः समो अपि परिकल्पते । अभ्युच्चितश् च अविश्वास्यो वृद्धिश् चित्त विकारिणी ॥
An ally of superior power should not be relied upon, for prosperity changes the mind. Even with little or no share in the spoils, an ally of superior power may go back, appearing contented;
english translation
jyAyastve ca api labdha arthaH samo api parikalpate । abhyuccitaz ca avizvAsyo vRddhiz citta vikAriNI ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptविशिष्टाद् अल्पम् अप्य् अंशं लब्ध्वा तुष्ट मुखो व्रजेत् । अनंशो वा ततो अस्य अङ्के प्रहृत्य द्वि गुणं हरेत् ॥
but some time afterwards, he may not fail to sit on the lap of the conqueror and carry off twice the amount of share due to him.
english translation
viziSTAd alpam apy aMzaM labdhvA tuSTa mukho vrajet । anaMzo vA tato asya aGke prahRtya dvi guNaM haret ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकृत अर्थस् तु स्वयं नेता विसृजेत् सामवायिकान् । अपि जीयेत न जयेन् मण्डल इष्टस् तथा भवेत् ॥
Having been satisfied with mere victory, the leading conqueror should discharge his allies, having satisfied them with their shares he may allow himself to be conquered by them instead of attempting to conquer them (in the matter of spoils); it is thus that a king can win the good graces of his Circle of States.
english translation
kRta arthas tu svayaM netA visRjet sAmavAyikAn । api jIyeta na jayen maNDala iSTas tathA bhavet ॥
