तद् एभिः कार्णैर् आश्रयेत "पार्ष्णि ग्राहम् आसारं मध्यमम् उदासीनं वा प्रतिपादयिष्यामि, सामन्त आटविक तत् कुलीन अपरुद्धानाम् अन्यतमेन अस्य राज्यं हारयिष्यामि घातयिष्यामि वा ॥ कृत्य पक्ष उपग्रहेण वा अस्य दुर्गे राष्ट्रे स्कन्ध आवारे वा कोपं समुत्थापयिष्यामि, शस्त्र अग्नि रस प्रणिधानैर् औपनिषदिकैर् वा यथा इष्टम् आसन्नं हनिष्यामि ॥ स्वयं अधिष्ठितेन वा योग प्रणिधानेन क्षय व्ययम् एनम् उपनेष्यामि, क्षय व्यय प्रवास उपतप्ते वा अस्य मित्र वर्गे सैन्ये वा क्रमेण उपजापं प्राप्स्यामि ॥ वीवध आसार प्रसार वधेन वा अस्य स्कन्ध आवार अवग्रहं करिष्यामि, दण्ड उपनयेन वा अस्य रन्ध्रम् उत्थाप्य सर्व संदोहेन प्रहरिष्यामि, प्रतिहत उत्साहेन वा यथा इष्टं संधिम् अवाप्स्यामि, मयि प्रतिबद्धस्य वा सर्वतः कोपाः समुत्थास्यन्ति ॥ निरासारं वा अस्य मूलं मित्र अटवी दण्डैर् उद्धातयिष्यामि, महतो वा देशस्य योग क्षेमम् इहस्थः पालयिष्यामि, स्व विक्षिप्तं मित्र विक्षिप्तं वा मे सैन्यम् इहस्थस्य एकस्थम् अविषह्यं भविष्यति, निम्न खात रात्रि युद्ध विशारदं वा मे सैन्यं पथ्य आबाध मुक्तम् आसन्ने कर्म करिष्यति ॥ विरुद्ध देश कालम् इह आगतो वा स्वयम् एव क्षय व्ययाभ्यां न भविष्यति, महा क्षय व्यय अभिगम्यो अयं देशो दुर्ग अटव्य् अपसार बाहुल्यात् ॥ परेषां व्याधि प्रायः सैन्य व्यायामानाम् अलब्ध भौमश् च, तम् आपद् गतः प्रवेक्ष्यति, प्रविष्टो वा न निर्गमिष्यति" इति ॥
Also for the following reasons, one should shelter oneself in such a fort:-- "I shall oppose him (the enemy) with his rear-enemy's ally or with a madhyama king, or with a neutral king; I shall either capture or devastate his kingdom with the aid of a neighbouring king, a wild tribe, a scion of his family, or an imprisoned prince; by the help of my partisans with him, I shall create troubles in his fort, country or camp; when he is near, I shall murder him with weapons, fire, or poison, or any other secret means at my pleasure; I shall, cause him to sustain a heavy loss of men and money in works undertaken by himself or made to be undertaken at the instance of my spies; I shall easily sow the seeds of dissension among his friends or his army when they have suffered from loss of men and money; I shall catch hold of his camp by cutting off supplies and stores going to it; or by surrendering myself (to him), I shall create some weak points in him and put him down with all my resources; or having curbed his spirit, I shall compel him to make peace with me on my own terms; when I obstruct his movements troubles arise to him from all sides; when he is helpless, I shall slay him with the help of my hereditary army or with his enemy's army; or with wild tribes; I shall maintain the safety and security of my vast country by entrenching myself within my fort; the army of myself and of my friends will be invincible when collected together in this fort; my army which is trained to fight from valleys, pits, or at night, will bring him into difficulties on his way, when he is engaged in an immediate work; owing to loss of men and money, he will make himself powerless when he arrives here at a bad place and in a bad time; owing to the existence of forts and of wild tribes (on the way), he will find this country accessible only at considerable cost of men and money; being unable to find positions favourable for the exercise of the armies of himself and of his friends, suffering from disease, he will arrive here in distress; or having arrived here, he will not return."
