यो वा यथा अयोगं भजेत तं तथा साधयेत्, साम दान भेद दण्डैर् वा यथा आपत्सु व्याख्यास्यामः ॥

and by offering help and abandoning hostilities against him who is a wandering enemy; one has to win over the confidence of any of the above kings by adopting suitable means or by means of conciliation, gifts, dissension, or threats, as will be explained under "Troubles."

english translation

yo vA yathA ayogaM bhajeta taM tathA sAdhayet, sAma dAna bheda daNDair vA yathA Apatsu vyAkhyAsyAmaH ॥

व्यसन उपघात त्वरितो वा कोश दण्डाभ्यां देशे काले कार्ये वा अवधृतं संधिम् उपेयात् ॥

He who is in troubles and is apprehensive of an attack from his enemy, should, on the condition of supplying the enemy with army and money, make peace with the enemy on definite terms with reference to place, time, and work.

english translation

vyasana upaghAta tvarito vA koza daNDAbhyAM deze kAle kArye vA avadhRtaM saMdhim upeyAt ॥

कृत संधिर् हीनम् आत्मानं प्रतिकुर्वीत ॥

he should also set right any offence he might have given by the violation of a treaty.

english translation

kRta saMdhir hInam AtmAnaM pratikurvIta ॥

पक्षे हीनो बन्धु मित्र पक्षं कुर्वीत, दुर्गम् अविषह्यं वा ॥

if he has no supporters, he should find them among his relatives and friends; or he may build an impregnable fortress.

english translation

pakSe hIno bandhu mitra pakSaM kurvIta, durgam aviSahyaM vA ॥

दुर्ग मित्र प्रतिष्टब्धो हि स्वेषां परेषां च पूज्यो भवति ॥

for he who is defended by forts and friends will be respected both by his own and his enemy's people.
