तस्मिन् योग क्षेम निष्पत्तिर् नयः, विपत्तिर् अपनयः ॥
and the attainment of a desired end as anticipated is (due to policy).
english translation
tasmin yoga kSema niSpattir nayaH, vipattir apanayaH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतच् चिन्त्यम्, अचिन्त्यं दैवम् ॥
What produces unfavourable results is impolicy. This can be foreseen; but misfortune due to providence cannot be known.

tac cintyam, acintyaM daivam ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptराजा आत्म द्रव्य प्रकृति सम्पन्नो नयस्य अधिष्ठानं विजिगीषुः ॥
The king who, being possessed of good character and best-fitted elements of sovereignty, is the fountain of policy, is termed the conqueror.
english translation
rAjA Atma dravya prakRti sampanno nayasya adhiSThAnaM vijigISuH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतस्य समन्ततो मण्डली भूता भूम्य् अनन्तरा अरि प्रकृतिः ॥
The king who is situated anywhere immediately on the circumference of the conqueror's territory is termed the enemy.
english translation
tasya samantato maNDalI bhUtA bhUmy anantarA ari prakRtiH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतथा एव भूम्य् एक अन्तरा मित्र प्रकृतिः ॥
The king who is likewise situated close to the enemy, but separated from the conqueror only by the enemy, is termed the friend (of the conqueror).

tathA eva bhUmy eka antarA mitra prakRtiH ॥
