चिर प्रवासः स्तम्भ प्रविष्टो वा मूल्य द्वि गुणं दद्यात् ॥

If it is allowed to accumulate owing either to the intention or to the absence abroad (of the receiver or payer), the amount payable shall be equal to twice the share or principal (múlyadvigunah).

अकृत्वा वृद्धिं साधयतो वर्धयतो वा, मूल्यं वा वृद्धिम् आरोप्य श्रावयतो बन्ध चतुर् गुणो दण्डः ॥

A person claiming interest when it is not due, or representing as principal the total amount of his original principal and the interest thereon shall pay a fine of four times the amount under dispute (bandhachaturgunah).

english translation

akRtvA vRddhiM sAdhayato vardhayato vA, mUlyaM vA vRddhim Aropya zrAvayato bandha catur guNo daNDaH ॥

तुच्छ श्रावणायाम् अभूत चतुर् गुणः ॥

A creditor who sues for four times the amount lent by him shall pay a fine of four times the unjust amount.

english translation

tuccha zrAvaNAyAm abhUta catur guNaH ॥

तस्य त्रि भागम् आदाता दद्यात्, शेषं प्रदाता ॥

Of this fine, the creditor shall pay ¾ths and the debtor ¼th.

दीर्घ सत्त्र व्याधि गुरु कुल उपरुद्धं बालम् असारं वा न ऋणम् अनुवर्धेत ॥

Interest on debts due from persons who are engaged in sacrifices taking a long time (dírghasatra), or who are suffering from disease, or who are detained in the houses of their teachers (for learning), or who are either minors or too poor, shall not accumulate.
