Arthashastra
निरन्तर योगित्वाच् च अर्थ अनर्थ संशयानां यात्रा आदाव् अर्थः श्रेयान् उपसम्प्राप्तुं पार्ष्णि ग्राह आसार प्रतिघाते क्षय व्यय प्रवास प्रत्यादेये मूल रक्षणेषु च भवति ॥
“Because situations involving doubt between gain and loss are continuously connected with one another, in a military expedition gain should be secured first at the very outset—especially in matters of seizing the enemy from the rear, resisting attacks on the camp, preventing loss and expenditure, returning safely from an expedition, recovering what is lost, and protecting the very foundations (resources) of the state.

nirantara yogitvAc ca artha anartha saMzayAnAM yAtrA AdAv arthaH zreyAn upasamprAptuM pArSNi grAha AsAra pratighAte kSaya vyaya pravAsa pratyAdeye mUla rakSaNeSu ca bhavati ॥
