क्षीण कृण काष्ठ उदकम् असंस्कृत दुर्गम मित्रं वासन्तिकं च अस्य सस्यं वार्षिकीं च मुष्टिम् उपहन्तुं ज्येष्ठामूलीयां यात्रां यायात् ॥
He should march during the month of Jyestha (May-June) against one whose storage of fodder, firewood and water has diminished and who has not repaired his fortifications, if he means to destroy the enemy's vernal crops and handfuls of the rainy season.
english translation
kSINa kRNa kASTha udakam asaMskRta durgama mitraM vAsantikaM ca asya sasyaM vArSikIM ca muSTim upahantuM jyeSThAmUlIyAM yAtrAM yAyAt ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअत्युष्णम् अल्प यवस इन्धन उदकं वा देशं हेमन्ते यायात् ॥
Or he may march during the dewy season against a country which is of hot climate and in which fodder and water are obtained in little quantities.
english translation
atyuSNam alpa yavasa indhana udakaM vA dezaM hemante yAyAt ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतुषार दुर्दिनम् अगाध निम्न प्रायं गहन तृण वृक्षं वा देशं ग्रीष्मे यायात् ॥
Or he may march during the summer against a country in which the sun is enshrouded by mist and which is full of deep valleys and thickets of trees and grass
english translation
tuSAra durdinam agAdha nimna prAyaM gahana tRNa vRkSaM vA dezaM grISme yAyAt ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस्व सैन्य व्यायाम योग्यं परस्य अयोग्यं वर्षति यायात् ॥
or he may march during the rains against a country which is suitable for the manœuvre of his own army and which is of the reverse nature for his enemy's army.
english translation
sva sainya vyAyAma yogyaM parasya ayogyaM varSati yAyAt ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptमार्गशीर्षीं तैषीं च अन्तरेण दीर्घ कालां यात्रां यायात्, चैत्रीं वैशाखीं च अन्तरेण मध्यम कालाम्, ज्येष्ठामूलीयाम् आषाढीं च अन्तरेण ह्रस्व कालाम्, उपोषिष्यन् व्यसने चतुर्थीम् ॥
He has to undertake a long march between the months of Márgasírsha (December) and Taisha (January), a march of mean length between March and April, and a short march between May and June; and one, afflicted with troubles, should keep quiet.
