क्वचित्क्षीणधनः शय्यासनाशनाद्युपभोगविहीनो यावदप्रतिलब्धमनोरथोपगतादानेऽवसितमतिस्ततस्ततोऽवमानादीनि जनादभिलभते ।। ५-१४-३६ ।।

sanskrit

Sometimes, having no money, the conditioned soul does not get sufficient accommodations. Sometimes he doesn’t even have a place to sit, nor does he have the other necessities. In other words, he falls into scarcity, and at that time, when he is unable to secure the necessities by fair means, he decides to seize the property of others unfairly. When he cannot get the things he wants, he simply receives insults from others and thus becomes very morose. ।। 5-14-36 ।।

english translation

कभी-कभी धनाभाव के कारण बद्धजीव को पर्याप्त स्थान प्राप्त करने में कठिनाई होती है। कभी तो उसे बैठने तक के लिए स्थान नहीं मिल पाता, न ही उसे अन्य आवश्यक वस्तुएँ ही प्राप्त होती हैं। दूसरे शब्दों में, वह अभाव का अनुभव करता है और नैतिक साधनों से इन आवश्यकताओं को न प्राप्त कर पाने के कारण वह अनैतिक ढंग से दूसरों की सम्पत्ति का अपहरण करता है। जब उसे वांछित वस्तुएँ प्राप्त नहीं हो पातीं वह दूसरों से अपमान ही प्राप्त करता है, जिससे वह अत्यन्त खिन्न हो उठता है। ।। ५-१४-३६ ।।

एवं वित्तव्यतिषङ्गविवृद्धवैरानुबन्धोऽपि पूर्ववासनया मिथ उद्वहत्यथापवहति ।। ५-१४-३७ ।।

sanskrit

Although people may be enemies, in order to fulfill their desires again and again, they sometimes get married. Unfortunately, these marriages do not last very long, and the people involved are separated again by divorce or other means. ।। 5-14-37 ।।

english translation

अपनी इच्छाओं की बारम्बार पूर्ति के लिए मनुष्य परस्पर शत्रु होने पर भी कभी-कभी विवाह सम्बध स्थापित कर लेते हैं। दुर्भाग्यवश ये विवाह दीर्घकाल तक नहीं चल पाते और ऐसे लोग तलाक या अन्य कारणों से पुन: विलग हो जाते हैं। ।। ५-१४-३७ ।।

एतस्मिन् संसाराध्वनि नानाक्लेशोपसर्गबाधित आपन्नविपन्नो यत्र यस्तमु ह वावेतरस्तत्र विसृज्य जातं जातमुपादाय शोचन्मुह्यन्बिभ्यद्विवदन् क्रन्दन्संहृष्यन् गायन्नह्यमानः साधुवर्जितो नैवावर्ततेऽद्यापि यत आरब्ध एष नरलोकसार्थो यमध्वनः पारमुपदिशन्ति ।। ५-१४-३८ ।।

The path of this material world is full of material miseries, and various troubles disturb the conditioned souls. Sometimes he loses, and sometimes he gains. In either case, the path is full of danger. Sometimes the conditioned soul is separated from his father by death or other circumstances. Leaving him aside he gradually becomes attached to others, such as his children. In this way, the conditioned soul is sometimes illusioned and afraid. Sometimes he cries loudly out of fear. Sometimes he is happy maintaining his family, and sometimes he is overjoyed and sings melodiously. In this way he becomes entangled and forgets his separation from the Supreme Personality of Godhead since time immemorial. Thus he traverses the dangerous path of material existence, and on this path he is not at all happy. Those who are self-realized simply take shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in order to get out of this dangerous material existence. Without accepting the devotional path, one cannot get out of the clutches of material existence. The conclusion is that no one can be happy in material life. One must take to Kṛṣṇa consciousness. ।। 5-14-38 ।।

इस भौतिक जगत का मार्ग क्लेशमय है और बद्धजीव को अनेक कष्ट विचलित करते रहते हैं। कभी वह हारता है, तो कभी जीतता है। प्रत्येक दशा में यह मार्ग विघ्नों से परिपूर्ण है। कभी बद्धजीव अपने पिता से मृत्यु होने या अन्य कारणों से विलग हो जाता है। वह उसे छोडक़र क्रमश: अन्यों से, यथा अपनी सन्तान से आसक्त हो जाता है। इस प्रकार बद्धजीव कभी-कभी भ्रमित और कभी भयके मारे जोर जोर से चीत्कार करता है। कभी वह अपने परिवार का भरण करते हुए प्रसन्न होता है, तो कभी अत्यधिक प्रसन्न हो जाता है और सुरीले गीत गाता है। इस तरह वह अनन्त काल से श्रीभगवान् के विछोह को भूलकर अपने में बँधता जाता है। उसे भौतिक जगत के भयानक पथ पर चलना तो पड़ता है, किन्तु वह इस पथ पर तनिक भी सुखी नहीं होता। स्वरूप-सिद्ध मनुष्य इस भयानक पथ से छूटने के निमित्त श्रीभगवान् की शरण ग्रहण करते हैं। भक्तिमार्ग को स्वीकार किये बिना भौतिक जगत के चंगुल से कोई नहीं निकल पाता। तात्पर्य यह है कि इस भौतिक जीवन में कोई भी प्रसन्न नहीं हो सकता है। उसे कृष्णाभावनामृत का आश्रय अवश्य ग्रहण करना चाहिए। ।। ५-१४-३८ ।।

यदिदं योगानुशासनं न वा एतदवरुन्धते यन्न्यस्तदण्डा मुनय उपशमशीला उपरतात्मानः समवगच्छन्ति ।। ५-१४-३९ ।।

sanskrit

Saintly persons, who are friends to all living entities, have a peaceful consciousness. They have controlled their senses and minds, and they easily attain the path of liberation, the path back to Godhead. Being unfortunate and attached to the miserable material conditions, a materialistic person cannot associate with them. ।। 5-14-39 ।।

english translation

समस्त जीवात्माओं के मित्र मुनिजन संयतात्मा होते हैं। वे अपनी इन्द्रियों एवं मन को वश में कर चुके होते हैं और उन्हें मुक्तिपथ, जो श्रीभगवान् तक पहुँचने का मार्ग है, सरलतापूर्वक प्राप्त होता है। क्लेशमय भौतिक परिस्थितियों में संलग्न रहने तथा हतभाग्य होने के कारण भौतिकतावादी व्यक्ति मुनिजनों की संगति नहीं कर पाता। ।। ५-१४-३९ ।।

yadidaM yogAnuzAsanaM na vA etadavarundhate yannyastadaNDA munaya upazamazIlA uparatAtmAnaH samavagacchanti || 5-14-39 ||

यदपि दिगिभजयिनो यज्विनो ये वै राजर्षयः किं तु परं मृधे शयीरन्नस्यामेव ममेयमिति कृतवैरानुबन्धायां विसृज्य स्वयमुपसंहृताः ।। ५-१४-४० ।।

There were many great saintly kings who were very expert in performing sacrificial rituals and very competent in conquering other kingdoms, yet despite their power they could not attain the loving service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This is because those great kings could not even conquer the false consciousness of “I am this body, and this is my property.” Thus they simply created enmity with rival kings, fought with them and died without having discharged life’s real mission. ।। 5-14-40 ।।

english translation

साधु प्रकृति वाले ऐसे अनेक महान् राजर्षि हो चुके हैं, जो यज्ञ अनुष्ठान में अत्यन्त प्रवीण तथा अन्य राज्यों को जीतने में परम कुशल थे, किन्तु इतनी शक्ति होने पर भी भगवान् की प्रेमाभक्ति नहीं कर पाये, क्योंकि वे महान् राजा, “मैं देह-स्वरूप हूँ और यह मेरी सम्पत्ति है” इस मिथ्या बोध को भी नहीं जीत पाये थे। इस प्रकार उन्होंने प्रतिद्वन्द्वी राजाओं से केवल शत्रुता मोल ली, उनसे युद्ध किया और वे जीवन के वास्तविक लक्ष्य को पूरा किये बिना दिवंगत हो गए। ।। ५-१४-४० ।।
